Di lembaga pendidikan Islam di Indonesia guru yang disebut ustadz biasa digunakan di lingkungan pendidikan Islam formal yang sistem pendidikannya diselenggarakan di madrasah. Dapat dipahami bahwa siapa saja bisa menjadi pendidik Islam asalkan dia lebih tahu mampu mengimplikasikan nilai-nilai yang relevan. Guru adalah profesi yang bukan sekedar pekerjaan atau panggilan. Melainkan kejuruan khusus yang memiliki ciri-ciri antara lain keahlian, tanggung jawab, rasa kerjasama.
